USGS publishes a Kīlauea status update every morning, and each one reads as a standalone snapshot. Read a single bulletin and you learn today's state. Read a run of them and you learn something more useful: which direction the forecast is drifting, and how much the observatory is actually revising its own numbers.
That drift is the part nobody publishes, so we compute it. Under each day below is a What changed line comparing that bulletin against the previous day: alert level moves, the eruption starting or stopping, and whether the forecast window for the next episode slid, tightened, or held. It is derived from the archived text, not from a separate USGS product, and when a bulletin cannot be parsed the line says nothing rather than guessing.
A pattern worth watching: a forecast window that keeps sliding one day later every day is a volcano that is refilling more slowly than the model expected. A window that suddenly tightens by several days usually means deformation data firmed up. Neither is a prediction on our part. Both are just the shape of the revisions.
Note on gaps: some days carry no USGS narrative. Those entries kept their alert level but the summary text was not captured, so no comparison is drawn. An empty summary here means we have no text for that day, not that the volcano was quiet.
