Privacy Policy

Hawaii Watch ("we", "us", or "our") operates hawaii-watch.com (the "Site"). This page describes what information we collect and how we use it.

Email address: If you subscribe to alerts, we store your email address and use it only to send you the alerts you asked for. There are two separate lists, Kīlauea volcano alerts and stargazing sky events, and joining one never signs you up for the other.

Your language: We store whether you signed up on an English or a Chinese page, so your alerts arrive in that language. You can change it at any time.

How you subscribed: We record which page the signup form was on and when. That is our record of your consent. We do not record your IP address at signup.

Changing or stopping alerts: Every email carries two links. "Unsubscribe" removes you from that one list. "Manage preferences" opens a page where you can switch language, choose which lists you are on, or stop all email from us at once. Neither needs an account or a password, and we never ask you for anything beyond the link itself.

Usage data: We use Google Analytics to collect anonymized data about how visitors use the Site (pages visited, session duration, device type). This data does not identify you personally.

The Site does not currently display third-party advertisements, and no advertising scripts or advertising cookies are loaded. Some pages link to tour operators through affiliate partners; those links are labelled where they appear, and following one takes you to the partner's own site under the partner's own privacy policy. If we introduce on-site advertising in the future, this policy will be updated first.

The Site uses cookies for analytics (Google Analytics). By using the Site, you consent to the use of cookies. You can disable cookies in your browser settings, though some features may not function correctly.

We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal information to anyone. Your email address is used only to send the alerts you subscribed to.

To run the Site we rely on a small number of service providers, and your address is handled by two of them: Resend, which delivers our email, and Neon, which hosts our database. The Site itself is hosted by Vercel. All three operate in the United States, so if you are reading this from outside the US, subscribing means your email address is stored and processed there.

The Site links to third-party sources such as USGS (usgs.gov) and the National Park Service. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites.

You can ask us what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask us to delete it. Write to privacy@hawaii-watch.com and we will action it. If all you want is to stop the email, the unsubscribe link in any alert is faster and takes effect immediately.

We keep a record of addresses that have unsubscribed. That is deliberate: it is what makes sure an old unsubscribe link keeps working, and what stops you being re-added by mistake. Ask us to delete it and we will.
