Episode 55 fountaining has concluded (ended 9:03 AM HST). Kīlauea's recent episodes have recurred every one to four weeks; USGS typically issues a forecast window for Episode 56 once summit tilt shows renewed inflation. Track it on the live forecast and pause pattern or the live dashboard.
Lava fountains in Episode 55 reached about 720 feet (220 meters), the 26th highest fountain height of 55 recorded episodes and essentially the median (710 ft).
The episode erupted an estimated 7 million cubic metres of lava, 35% above the median of 5.2M m³.
Fountaining lasted 6 hours, 40% below the median of 10 hours. Kīlauea's episodes are short and intense: most last hours, not days.
Comparisons computed across the 55 eruptive episodes USGS has recorded for the ongoing Halemaʻumaʻu eruption. Figures are USGS preliminary values and can be revised.

A shallow intrusion occurred beneath Halemaʻumaʻu at the summit Kīlauea volcano Sep 30–Oct 1. At present there is minor spattering at both north and south vents. It is not possible to forecast the onset of episode 55 fountains or if they will occur. Volcanic Activity: HVO is issuing a weekly Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) and associated Volcano Activity Notices (VAN) which are now required to be reissued weekly for volcanoes at ORANGE. (VONA repeat interval is daily for volcanoes at RED and every two weeks for volcanoes at YELLOW).A shallow intrusion occurred beneath Halemaʻuma
Kīlauea has been intermittently erupting bursts of spatter building a small cone around the north vent in Halemaʻumaʻu; no precursory flows since September 12. Summit inflation stalled last night further delaying the onset of episode 55 fountaining.
