What Happened in Episode 42
Episode 42 produced significant lava fountaining at Halemaʻumaʻu, erupting approximately 14 million cubic yards of lava and covering 40–50% of the crater floor. Both fountains reached heights of up to 500 feet (150 meters). Episode 42 ended on February 15, 2026 at 11:38 PM HST.
Why the Forecast Window?
USGS models eruption timing based on summit tilt data, ground deformation, and inflationary trends. The initial rapid rebound of tilt and glow after Episode 42 ended indicated another episode is likely. However, periods of deflation or no inflation create uncertainty — the window may shift.
