Forecast Window
Ahead of the episode, USGS models put the onset of Episode 43 lava fountaining between March 8 and 15, 2026. Fountaining began on March 10, inside that window. Windows like this one shift with tilt inflation data, which is why USGS publishes a range rather than a date.
What Happened in Episode 42
Episode 42 produced significant lava fountaining at Halemaʻumaʻu, erupting approximately 14 million cubic yards of lava and covering 40–50% of the crater floor. Both fountains reached heights of up to 500 feet (150 meters). Episode 42 ended on February 15, 2026 at 11:38 PM HST.
Why the Forecast Window?
USGS models eruption timing based on summit tilt data, ground deformation, and inflationary trends. The initial rapid rebound of tilt and glow after Episode 42 ended indicated another episode is likely. However, periods of deflation or no inflation create uncertainty, and the window may shift.
