Understanding USGS Volcano Alert Levels
USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory uses a four-level alert system to communicate Kīlauea's current activity to the public and aviation.
Volcano is in its typical background state. No eruption expected.
Volcano is exhibiting signs of elevated unrest above known background levels. Potential for eruption increased but not imminent.
Heightened or escalating unrest with increased potential of eruption, or eruption underway with limited hazards.
Eruption underway with significant hazards to life and property, or eruption imminent.
Aviation Color Codes
Aviation color codes run parallel: GREEN (Normal) → YELLOW (Advisory) → ORANGE (Watch) → RED (Warning). These are critical for flight safety as volcanic ash can damage aircraft engines.
