The season, from this latitude

Most Milky Way season charts are written for the mainland US. Hawaiʻi sits far enough south that the season runs longer and the core climbs higher. These figures are computed for the Visitor Station: the highest the core gets while the sky is astronomically dark, on the 15th of each month.

Computed for 2026 at 19.76°N, 155.46°W, 2,800 m. The core tops out near 41° here, which is the geometry of a −29° declination at this latitude, not a rule of thumb.

How to actually see it

  • Go within about five days of new moon. This matters more than anything else on this page, including where you stand. A half moon is enough to erase the dust lanes.
  • Give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes with no phone screen. The core goes from a faint smudge to a structured band over that time, and one glance at a bright screen resets it.
  • Look south. From here the core sits in the southern sky, above where Mauna Loa's shoulder falls away, and it is brightest in the two hours either side of its highest point.
  • Use your peripheral vision. Faint detail registers better slightly off to the side than dead centre, which is a quirk of how the eye is built and takes some getting used to.
  • Do not expect the photographs. A camera collects light for 20 seconds; your eye collects it for a fraction of one. What you see is real and grey, not pink and orange.

If you are photographing it

A wide fast lens, the camera on something solid, and a shutter long enough to collect light but short enough that the stars stay points rather than streaks. The usual starting point is a 500-divided-by-focal-length rule of thumb, then shorten it if you pixel-peep and see trailing.

Focus manually on a bright star using live view at maximum magnification. Autofocus will hunt and infinity on the lens barrel is usually slightly wrong.

Shoot raw, and shoot more frames than you think you need. The single biggest improvement most people make is stacking several exposures rather than pushing one very hard.

The mountain gets cold and batteries die fast in it. Bring spares and keep them somewhere warm.
